Moldova is ranked the second in the world where the percentage of the money transfer from native people working abroad in the GDP is the largest. Only Tongo has a larger percent.
These figures were reported by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the 39th Conference on Population and Development. He had stressed that the positive moment from labor migration in developing countries is the increased salary that these workers are paid, a big part of which they manage to save and send back home.
According to the WB, in 2004 the official amount of money transfer from abroad was USD 226 bilion, of which about 64% (145 bilion) was received by developing countries - said Annan.
The largest amount of money was received by India, China, Mexico and the Phillipines, but as a ratio of the GDP, the largest was in Tongo (31%), Moldova (27%), Lesotho (26%).
These figures are dramatic for Moldova's future if this trend continues to maintain. There is a need to channel these money into investment that will create local jobs and will boost the competitiveness of Moldova's products on regional and international markets. Only in this way, Moldova has a chance to have a place under the sun...
